Eisenach travel guide

Eisenach is best known for the stunning Wartburg, perhaps Germany's best preserved medieval castle. The Wartburg was the hiding place of Martin Luther and is the site of the stunning mosaics of the Elisabethkemenate chamber, remembering St Elisabeth. The castle has intimate associations with the medieval court minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide and the Wagner opera Tannhäuser

But Eisenach was also Luther's home in his youth and the building where he lived is preserved. It was also the birthplace of Bach and his house is a museum of the composer's life and work.

The small city was a seat of the dukes of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, marked by a Baroque palace.
