Krems travel guide

Your independent Krems travel guide

Visitors to Krems an der Donau get two towns in one, plus many nearby attractions. Krems’ Danube neighbour Stein has long been considered part of Krems, even though the towns and their institutions were separate for centuries.

This Krems travel guide covers the attractions for both Krems and Stein, as well as nearby attractions.

The legacy for modern travellers is two of everything - except churches. There are nine historical churches spread over the twin destinations.

Together, Krems and Stein are a world of medieval streets and lanes, devotional monuments, decorated historical buildings spanning eight centuries, abbeys and nearby castle ruins.

Krems lies just over an hour from Vienna at the centre of the UNESCO world-heritage area known as the Wachau, centred on the Danube valley’s winegrowing region.

The spectacular Baroque city gate Steiner Tor is Krems’ showpiece site. But the parish church of St Veit, known widely as Dom der Wachau, has treasures uncommon in small cities. The Piaristenkirche, a medieval church with interior paintings and richly illustrated exterior scenes from the life and death of Christ.

The medieval Hoher Markt precinct includes the priceless Gozzoburg palace complex with its interior paintings.

The Dominikanerkirche, a former abbey church that now houses MuseumKrems, contains more art and artefacts and there is a precinct of art museums with works from early periods to the 21st century.

Stein’s remarkable Frauenbergkirche has a 14th century Gothic church with a prominent tower and bell that served as a fire tower for the area for two centuries.

The richly decorated Baroque abbey Stift Göttweig, on a hill enjoying a spectacular view over the Wachau about 9km from Krems. Its showpiece staircase is one of the most remarkable in Austria. Another beautiful abbey is on the banks of the Danube, not far away.
